I strongly believe that art has the power to transform environments, making spaces feel more personal, positive, and vibrant.
I am Donique van Schaik, and I feel equally at home in both South Africa and the Netherlands. I think and dream in Afrikaans while fully embracing Dutch culture and traditions. Every winter, like the swallows, I fly back to Africa—with an empty suitcase, ready to be filled with inspiration. When I return to the Netherlands, I relive that beauty in my work.
My inspiration comes from the South African blue sky, raw textures, poetry, and the places my ancestors once called home. The Netherlands, in turn, offers a palette of endless green hues and dramatic clouds. In my art, I connect these two worlds—a dialogue between the South African sunlight and the Dutch landscape.
I believe that our surroundings deeply influence our state of mind. Through art, we can create spaces that are more beautiful, lighter, and more inspiring—helping to make the world around us just a little bit better.
Each painting is more than just an image—it is an exploration of form, colour, and movement. I draw inspiration from the changing seasons, vast skies, rolling hills, and the interplay of light and shadow across the landscape.
Through brushstrokes, palette knife techniques, and layering, I create works that invite viewers to interpret the scene in their own way. My style exists at the intersection of the real and the imagined—where nature is transformed into something new, yet still familiar.
